Which Caribbean novelist would you like to meet and have a conversation with if you had the chance, and why? S/he doesn't have to be on the list of authors we're studying this semester for LITS 2508. If the person is no longer living, you can still let us know if you would have liked to have met him/her. And if you have more than one choice, that's fine too.
I would like to talk to both Kamau Brathwaite and VS Naipaul. Having done 'The Arrivants' and 'Mimic Men' last semester, I realized that they address similar issues, but while Brathwaite seems to adopt an optimistic view on the potential of Caribbean individuals to free themselves from ongoing colonization, Naipaul seems to remain quite pessimistic.
ReplyDeleteMine would be Sam Selvon. For me the decision to narrate his novel in Trinidad Standard English was a very brave one. Especially in that period even before Trinidad and Tobago had even earned its Independence. So I would like to ask him how difficult was it to make the decision to do that.
ReplyDeleteI would love to have a conversation with Louise Bennett, jean D'costa and Michael Anthony. Louise Bennett because I can see what she see Jean D'costa because she wrote stories where I walked. Michael Anthony because of nostalgia of young love.
